CIRCLE OF STARS - EU made our City Pre-election tour

In an age of polarisation, climate change and war, we need the European Union more than ever. Whoosh wants to celebrate the EU parliamentary elections in 2024, with a tour looking at how Brussels funding and cooperation have helped shape the look of our city. So we tour the best new EU-financed projects, and explore the ways in which Vienna and Austria have changed since accession in 1995.

We want to encourage everybody to vote for their European representatives in these days – 6-9 June 2024 – but also to reflect on the value of a progressive, liberal force in a time of Chinese nationalism and US arrogance. Voters often use the occasion to send a message to their national governments, and so from Italy to France, Austria to Belgium, Germany to the Netherlands, we face the danger that parties on the far right are likely to see significant gains.

Polls suggest the two groups on the right could overtake the centre left and become the second largest force in Parliament. Until now, the centre right has tended to work together with the centre left but the European People's Parties may come under pressure to seek new allies if the centre left performs badly.

A move to the right could put the brakes on plans for new climate and sustainability laws and influence social or economic legislation. The EU's strong backing for financial and military aid for Ukraine could also be affected.

Tour guide Eugene is British (with Irish parents), living in Austria, and so in some ways an EU story. Since UK left EU in 2021, he cannot vote in any elections here, but would love to. And so he organised a Brexit night sad party for the Brits in Vienna, to show how angry they were (but with rather fine music from the island, in Tube Station pub in Landstrasse), and a Brexit tour, to show the productive ways UK and Austria have intercultural dialogue (Freud, pubs, Julia Ebner & FM4).

We welcome Silja Tillner on this walk, who will show us some of her cool interventions on Westgürtel, including URBION (Urban Revitalization) which was co- financed by the EFRE and ESF funds in the URBAN program part-financed by European Commission. With Austria scoring lowest on the Eurobarometer rating of EU approval, this tour is a warning about a possible Oexit, but also a reflection on how provincial and boring our city was pre-1995. Let's not go back there, as Britain is trying to do. We love EU! There is lots of false information circulating about the European Union, from bad actors, and we want to counter all that with facts about what unity means. #strengthInDiversity

In einer Zeit der politischen Polarisierung, des Klimawandels und des Krieges brauchen wir die Europäische Union mehr denn je. Whoosh möchte die EU-Parlamentswahlen 2024 mit einer Tour feiern, die sich damit beschäftigt, wie Brüsseler Fördermittel das Aussehen unserer Stadt beeinflusst haben. Wir besuchen die besten neuen EU-finanzierten Projekte und entdecken, wie sich Wien und Österreich seit dem Beitritt im Jahr 1995 verändert haben.

Wir wollen alle dazu ermutigen, in diesen Tagen - vom 6. bis 9. Juni 2024 - ihre europäischen Vertreter zu wählen, aber auch über den Wert einer fortschrittlichen, liberalen Kraft in einer Zeit des chinesischen Nationalismus und der amerikanischen Arroganz nachzudenken.

Reiseleiter Eugene ist Brite (mit irischen Eltern), lebt in Österreich und ist somit in gewisser Weise eine EU-Geschichte. Da das UK im Jahr 2021 aus der EU austritt, kann er hier nicht an Wahlen teilnehmen, würde es aber gerne tun. Und so organisierte er eine Brexit Night Sad Party für die Briten in Wien, um zu zeigen, wie wütend sie waren (aber mit ziemlich guter Musik von der Insel, im Tube Station Pub in der Landstraße), und eine Brexit Tour, um die produktiven Möglichkeiten des interkulturellen Dialogs zwischen Großbritannien und Österreich zu zeigen (Freud, Pubs, Julia Ebner & FM4).

Wir hoffen, Silja Tillner auf diesem Spaziergang begrüßen zu dürfen, die uns einige ihrer coolen Interventionen am Westgürtel zeigen wird, die von der Europäischen Kommission kofinanziert wurden. Da Österreich im Eurobarometer bei der Zustimmung zur EU am schlechtesten abschneidet, ist diese Tour eine Warnung vor einem möglichen Oexit, aber auch eine Reflexion darüber, wie provinziell und langweilig unsere Stadt vor 1995 war. Lassen Sie uns nicht dorthin zurückkehren, wie es Großbritannien versucht zu tun. Wir lieben die EU!
