VWW: Die Besten Grätzloasen Wiens

Eine wärmere Stadt

Seit dem Jahr 2000 haben sich die Haltungen zu öffentlichem Raum verändert, da wir mehr und mehr verstehen, dass die Räume zwischen Wiens Gebäuden - die Straßen, Plätze und Grünzonen - von gleicher Bedeutung sind wie jene Bauten, die diese umgeben, wenn es darum geht, eine humanere Stadt zu kreieren. ​

Als eine Person, deren Job es ist, den ganzen Tag Wiens Straßen entlang zu spazieren, bringen Parklets Farben in mein Leben, und sie sind so viel nützlicher als die Autos, welche sie ersetzen.

In seinem großartigen Buch Glück und Architektur, sagt Alain de Botton ‘our built environment should tell us where we are’. An einer warmen Nacht in Wien fühle ich mich zuhause, sobald ich mein lokales Parklet sehe.

Wir von Whoosh sehen uns als Rebellische Optimisten und fühlen uns inspiriert von coolen urbanen Interventionen wie diesen. Die Wiener sind nicht die theatralischten Menschen, und dies ist nicht die freundlichste Stadt, aber Parklets tragen zum Gefühl von Offenheit und sozialer Innovation bei, die das neue Wien repräsentiert. Für mich als Londoner ist der Kontrast, wie teuer meine alte Stadt war, und dass Wien so viele konsumfreie Orte hat, eine schöne Erinnerung, wie klein die Ungleichheit hier doch ist.

Straßen voller Leute sind so viel interessanter als leere. Und Parklets bringen die Leute zusammen, ins Gespräch und in die Gemeinschaft.

Für alle die sich fragen, warum Thomas Grötschnig - bekannt dafür, die lokale Street Art Szene zusammen zu bringen - jetzt ein Buch über Parklets macht… Naja, das ist einfach dasselbe. Graffiti und Parklets bringen Farben und Kreativität in langweile Straßen. Sie ersetzen stumpfsinnige Dinge - geparkte Autos und graue Wände - mit etwas, das viel visueller, sozialer und kultureller ist. Und sie sind beide kontrovers, denn Sprayer kommen aus einer illegalen Szene, und Grätzloasen ersetzen Parkplätze.

Zu einer Zeit der Verzweiflung über die USA - hier eine Idee, die sich von Kalifornien aus weltweit verbreitet hat und auf neue Formen und fruchtbaren Boden hier in Wien gestoßen ist.

‘A warmer city’

Since 2000, attitudes to the public realm have transformed, as we come to understand that the spaces between Vienna’s buildings – its streets, squares, green spaces – are as important as the surrounding buildings in creating a more human city.

As a person whose job is walking Vienna’s streets all day, Parklets bring colour to my life, and are so much more useful than the cars they replace.

In his lovely book The Architecture of Happiness, Alain de Botton says our built environment should tell us where we are. Whenever I return to a warm Vienna night, I know I am home on seeing my local Parklet. It’s the combination of ultra-urban with an optimistic green or artistic touch.

We at Whoosh see ourselves as rebellious optimists, and find cool urban interventions like this inspirational. The Viennese are not the most theatrical people, and this is not the friendliest city, but Parklets add to the sense of openness and social innovation the new Vienna represents. As a Londoner, the contrast with how expensive my old city was, and that Wien has so many places where consumption is not required, is a beautiful reminder of the low inequality here.

Streets full of people are more interesting than empty ones. And Parklets bring people together in conversation and community.

For anyone wondering why Thomas Grötschnig - famous for bringing the local street art scene together - is now making a book about Parklets… well, they are the same thing. Graffiti and Parklets bring colour and creativity to boring streets. They replace dull things - parked cars and grey walls - with something more visual, social, cultural. And they are both controversial, because sprayers build on an illegal scene, and Grätzloasen replace parking spaces.

At a time when some despair about the USA, here’s an idea which spread from California around the world, and found new forms and fertile ground here in Wien. Let’s all explore and meet at our local microfreiräume.
