Red Vienna's social housing innovations continue to resonate around the world. Many other cities are jealous of the achievements of that remarkable period. These visionary buildings still work well after 100 years, and we will explore why on this tour.
But the story continues, and so we will fast-forward to the 1980s, when architecture and the atmosphere had changed so much. Our tour then visits Friedensreich Hundertwasser's Haus in Marxergasse.
And to bring things up to date, we visit a three year old house, in Sonnwendviertel, to look at new models of financing and experiments in social living.
Eugene has been touring Gemeindebauten for six years now, first at the invitation of Wiener Wohnen, to celebrate 100 years of Red Vienna, then for Wien Museum and Wir Sind Wien Festival. Last year, he showed the six Gemeindebauten of the Innere Stadt, after tours of London vs Wien social housing, 10 buildings from 10 decades in Floridsdorf, and the Ringstrasse des Proletariats in Margareten and Meidling.
