Every year, as part of Walking Week, we tour one district inside the Gürtel, and one outside. This year, it is the turn of Wieden, in the heart of south Wien. The name of this part of town is the same as the name of the city in many Slav languages, and similar to Wien. It goes back to the Celts who founded our settlement, 2,700 years ago. Eugene is himself a Celt.
So what will we explore on this alternative walk? From the new Wien Museum to 300 year old Karlskirche, why Karlsplatz became the party place for youth in the pandemic, the Technical University, Funkhaus and the remixed Argentinienstrasse, many embassies, funky Schleifmühlg., Naschmarkt (and its disputed future), Wienfluss, Theresianum school and Diplomatic Academy, street art and charming back streets, cool Beisln - and why this chic part of town still votes Red.
