Whoosh loves public transport, and Wiener Linien is a big success story for our city. Though not many Viennese realise just how good their service is - we live in a city of complainers. So we will celebrate living in a place which is expanding fast, and where the most popular mode of transport is trams, buses and u-bahn trains.
For many years now, the city has been a massive building site, as 1.5 new lines are dug and built. Once they are complete, even fewer locals will want or need a car, and the proportion using our modern, efficient system will increase further.
When the local government is choosing where to build expensive new lines, they take them to poorer districts, in order to redistribute wealth across the city. When new stations open, districts become more attractive places to work, live and study - and the rents go up.
This walk takes us from the centre of the city, near to University of Vienna, at Schottentor, to future stations Rathaus, Neubaugasse (connecting with U3), Pilgramgasse (to connect with U4), Reinprechtsdorfer Strasse, Matzleinsdorfer Platz, Gussriegelstrasse, and out to Wienerberg.
There have been several problems and delays in the building process, and we will explore these, and try to guess when the whole thing will be completed.
