OSCARS AND VIENNA

On the same day as the 97th Academy Awards ceremony in Los Angeles, we explore Vienna as a film location, and also those players in the industry who were born here and went on to create parts of the American Dream in moving pictures, in exile. Austria has won various Oscars, both for actors like Christoph Waltz, directors Fritz Lang, Sam Spiegel (Lawrence of Arabia, On the Waterfront), Billy Wilder (Some like it Hot, Sunset Boulevard) and Michael Haneke, and several times the Foreign Language award, which is one of the most prestigious.

Of course the awards do not always recognise the best culture, but somehow the award - like Eurovision - is so present that people refer to all other ceremonies as the Oscars for -gardening, -plastic manufacturers, or whatever. Academy Awards season is about so much more than just films, reflecting the political mood in America, and fashion, business, glamour and our fantasy lives and dreams. No other industry has so many awards (Cannes, Venice Golden Lion, BAFTA, Berlinale, Golden Globes, Foreign Press Writers, even though the film industry is now less important than gaming, fashion, music or football.

It is impossible not to discuss the Shoah in this context, and why our city lost so much of its dynamism and humour and ideas with the Jews, after 1938. We will listen to soundtracks, hear stories of emigres and the way their European sensibility played out across the Atlantic. Sometimes, films set in Vienna are actually produced in Prague or Budapest, or vice versa.

Eugene has become fascinated with Oskar Werner while researching this tour. Born in Mariahilf, and part of the Burgtheater ensemble, he had a legendary smooth voice, radical politics and wild lifestyle. He was nominated for the Best Actor Award (1966), for Ship of Fools, but not for the more famous Jules et Jim (Francois Truffaut, 1961).

The film industry is in crisis for some years now, because of covid, streaming, the high cost of staffing and energy, Hollywood writers' strike in 2023, and a lack of great new films from the studios, who prefer prequels and formulaic productions than alternative or creative new directions. Yet we always return to the silver screen for great storytelling, escape and big bold images. With the change in leadership in USA, it will be interesting to see how the ceremony this year responds to Donald Trump's vision for America. Actors are famously liberal - and so have reacted badly to trans actress Karla Sofia Gascon's (Emilia Perez) racist and Islamophobic opinions.

A beautiful and atmospheric tour, celebrating a very cinematic city. And a recognition of Viennese creativity.

We invited the Vienna Film Commission to contribute to the tour, but they were not interested. We will explore the role of various layers of bureaucracy which control Austrian film-making.

The event is in English, because the Oscars are in English.

Am Tag der 97. Oscar-Verleihung in Los Angeles erkunden wir den Filmstandort Wien und die Akteure der Branche, die hier geboren wurden und im Exil einen Teil des amerikanischen Traums in bewegten Bildern geschaffen haben. Österreich hat mehrere Oscars gewonnen, sowohl für Schauspieler wie Christoph Waltz, Regisseure wie Fritz Lang, Sam Spiegel (Lawrence von Arabien, On the Waterfront), Billy Wilder (Manche mögen's heiß, Sunset Boulevard) und Michael Haneke, als auch mehrmals den Preis für den fremdsprachigen Film, der einer der renommiertesten ist.

Natürlich wird bei den Preisverleihungen nicht immer die beste Kultur gewürdigt, aber irgendwie ist der Preis - wie die Eurovision - so präsent, dass die Leute alle anderen Zeremonien als die Oscars für Gärtner, Plastikhersteller oder was auch immer bezeichnen. Bei der Oscar-Verleihung geht es um so viel mehr als nur um Filme, sie spiegelt die politische Stimmung in Amerika wider, ebenso wie Mode, Wirtschaft, Glamour und unsere Fantasie und Träume. Keine andere Branche hat so viele Auszeichnungen (Cannes, Goldener Löwe von Venedig, BAFTA, Berlinale, Golden Globes, Foreign Press Writers), auch wenn die Filmindustrie heute weniger wichtig ist als Spiele, Mode, Musik oder Fußball.

Es ist unmöglich, in diesem Zusammenhang nicht über die Shoah zu sprechen, und darüber, warum unsere Stadt nach 1938 so viel von ihrer Dynamik, ihrem Humor und ihren Ideen in Bezug auf die Juden verloren hat. Wir werden Soundtracks hören, Geschichten von Emigranten und die Art und Weise, wie ihr europäisches Empfinden jenseits des Atlantiks zum Tragen kam. Manchmal werden Filme, die in Wien spielen, in Prag oder Budapest produziert, oder umgekehrt.

Eugene hat sich bei seinen Recherchen für diese Tournee für Oskar Werner interessiert. Der gebürtige Mariahilfer, der zum Ensemble des Burgtheaters gehörte, hatte eine legendäre sanfte Stimme, eine radikale Politik und einen wilden Lebensstil. Er wurde für den Preis als bester Schauspieler (1966) für Ship of Fools nominiert, nicht aber für den berühmteren Jules et Jim (Francois Truffaut, 1961).

Die Filmindustrie befindet sich seit einigen Jahren in einer Krise: Covid, Streaming, hohe Personal- und Energiekosten, der Streik der Hollywood-Autoren im Jahr 2023 und der Mangel an großartigen neuen Filmen seitens der Studios, die lieber Prequels und formelhafte Produktionen als alternative oder kreative neue Wege gehen. Dennoch kehren wir immer wieder auf die Leinwand zurück, um großartige Geschichten zu hören, zu entkommen und große, kühne Bilder zu sehen. Angesichts des Führungswechsels in den USA wird es interessant sein zu sehen, wie die diesjährige Preisverleihung auf Donald Trumps Vision für Amerika reagieren wird. Die Schauspieler sind bekanntlich liberal - und haben daher auf die rassistischen und islamfeindlichen Äußerungen der Trans-Schauspielerin Karla Sofia Gascon (Emilia Perez) schlecht reagiert.

Eine schöne und stimmungsvolle Tour, die eine sehr filmische Stadt feiert. Und eine Anerkennung der Wiener Kreativität.

Wir haben die Vienna Film Commission eingeladen, sich an der Tour zu beteiligen, aber sie war nicht interessiert. Wir werden die Rolle der verschiedenen Ebenen der Bürokratie untersuchen, die das österreichische Filmschaffen kontrollieren.

Die Veranstaltung ist auf Englisch, weil die Oscars auf Englisch sind.
