How diverse is Vienna in 2026? And how deep does its international food scene go? We will take a look at migration into the city, and how we foreigners have changed our new hometown. Looking at politics and statistics, but also culture and smells, and current political debates, we make a world tour of unusual cuisine. You must reserve places on this walk, so that we can tell the restaurants how many people are coming. After a stroll looking at some of the variety of groups who have moved here, we eat a first course in a Vietnam restaurant, then a Russian main course, and Swedish dessert.

One of the issues we will discuss is how authentic the food is, and how it changed for Viennese tastes and sensibilities.

This event was developed as part of Vienna Walking Week 2025, our attempt to save the world - by holidaying at home. And it was so popular that we repeated it in November, and now in March, before the official premiere in July 2026.

Food tells the story of a people, and short of visiting a place, it is perhaps the best glimpse into it.

The gastronomy scene in Vienna is under intense pressure these days, with fine places closing each week, due to rising energy costs, higher food prices, shortage of personnel, and a worsening economy leading to residents having less money to spend. Once a neighbourhood bistro closes, a community loses so much identity and connection. So we are happy to support local restaurants, and explore new food.
