VWW: Margareten

Margareten is one of three Vienna districts named after women. It is an insider district, with few tourists, but atmospheric and full of good food. This is the most densely-populated, and most Gay part of Vienna. Although historically working class, it is becoming more fancy, with ex-industrial buildings converted into co-working and creative boutiques. And it is was the only part of Vienna to elect a new party into power in April 2025 elections, with Green replacing Red, which reflects this gentrification.

Some of the places we will explore: Propeller, Filmquartier, some street art, Tandlermarkt, Ringstrasse de Proletariats, Vienna river, Naschmarkt changing fleamarket, Falco’s favourite bar where he wrote many songs, Vorwärtshaus where Red Vienna was born, and beautiful Margaretenhof. This is the place where both Hans Moser and Bruno Kreisky grew up.
