Ferhat makes legendary Kebaps on Favoritenstrasse

Here it comes, the big one. Turkish Wien and all its stories. One of the most visible, colourful, noisiest groups in Vienna, our Turkish community, is presented in all its complexity. With Elif Ülker, German teacher and granddaughter of Gasterbeiter*Innen, with her own story to tell. Plus Eugene Quinn, adding to a series of walks from Whoosh, about different national groups here in central Europe. Next year, Eugene will be leading two tours of Istanbul, as part of Urban Future Conference, and then MARUF.

We first made this event in May 2026, after long planning (Eugene wanted to make a party for all the Turks & Viennese on Yppenplatz, but was worried about the nationalist dimension). There will be music and food, politics and language, literature and sentimental stories, controversy, religion, belonging and racism, relationship to the motherland and success in a new land. How integrated are the Turks? How many live here? Where is the most Turkish part of the city, and where can we find the best Kebap?... Kenan Guengoer, a Viennese of Kurdish-Turkish-German origins, released a report recently, into the relationship between youth, religion and democracy, which was much discussed (and misinterpreted) in the Austrian press.

Among the most visible people of Turkish origin in Vienna are Yusuf Demir of Rapid Wien, Esrap group, MPs Berivan Aslan and Alev Korun (Gruenen), Nurten Yilmaz (SPOe) and Ani Guelguen Mayr (ORF journalist).

The Halay dance is performed on the streets of Favoriten most weekends, and at many Turkish weddings
